Procedure

To a solution of (5-bromo-6-nitro-pyridin-2-yl)-carbamic acid tert-butyl ester (11) (4.2 g, 13.2 mmol) in dry DMF (21 mL), DBU (5.02 g, 33.0 mmol)! was added at 0° C. Methyl iodide (3.75 g, 26.4 mmol) was added slowly at 0° C. After stirring for 3 hours at 0° C. the reaction mixture was quenched and the product was precipitated upon addition of aqueous NaHSO4 (1M). The crude product was isolated by filtration and purified by recrystallisation from a mixture of MeCN and water to afford (5-bromo-6-nitro-pyridin-2-yl)-methyl-carbamic acid tert-butyl ester 12 (1.55 g).
