Procedure
A 50 mL culture tube containing methyl 3-[1-(4-bromophenyl)-1H-[1,2,4]triazol-3-yl]benzoate (407 mg, 1.14 mmol), copper (I) iodide (10.8 mg, 0.057 mmol), pyrrolidin-2-one (121 mg, 1.42 mmol) and potassium carbonate (138 mg, 2.28 mmol) is evacuated and back charged with nitrogen. N,N′-Dimethylethylenediamine (10 mg, 0.12 mmol) and toluene (5 mL) are added, the tube is sealed with a PTFE cap, and the reaction mixture is heated to 110° C. with stirring for 12 h. The cooled reaction mixture is partitioned between water and ethyl acetate, and the organic extract is washed with water, dried over MgSO4, filtered and evaporated. The residual material is separated by column chromatography (silica gel, 1:20 methanol-dichloromethane) to provide methyl 3-{1-[4-(2-oxo-pyrrolidin-1-yl)-phenyl]-1H-[1,2,4]triazol-3-yl}-benzoate as a tan solid (380 mg, 92%).
