To a solution of 4-methyl-3-[2-methyl-4-(3-methyl-benzyloxy)-6-oxo-6H-pyrimidin-1-yl]-benzoic acid methyl ester from Step A (218 mg, 0.58 mmol) in isopropanol (2 mL) was added N-chlorosuccinimide (84 mg, 0.63 mmol) and 2 drops of dichloroacetic acid. The solution was heated at 60° C. for two hours. The solution was concentrated in vacuo and the residue was partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The organic layer was washed with water and brine and dried over magnesium sulfate. The slurry was filtered and concentrated to provide the chlorinated product as a light yellow oil (230 mg, 78%).
