To (1S,6R)-tert-butyl 3,8-diazabicyclo[4.2.0]octane-3-carboxylate (1.4 g, 6.8 mmol) in THF (35 mL) and H2O (35 mL) was added Na2CO3 (1.4 g. 13.6 mmol) and CbzCl (1.1 mL, 7.5 mmol). After 18 h, the reaction mix was diluted with H2O and extracted with CH2Cl2 (2×). The combined organics were dried (Na2SO4) to give 2.4 g of the title compound as a clear oil that was used without further purification.
