Procedure

A mixture of 1-[1-(3-fluorophenyl)-1H-indol-2-yl]ethanone (0.40 g, 1.6 mmol) and ammonium acetate (1.22 g, 15.8 mmol) in methanol (5.0 mL) and acetonitrile (5.0 mL) was heated at 65° C. in a sealed tube for 30 minutes. After cooling to room temperature, sodium cyanoborohydride (0.20 g, 3.2 mmol) was added to the resultant mixture. The reaction was heated at 65° C. overnight. The reaction was cooled to room temperature and quenched with saturated NaHCO3 solution and extracted with dichloromethane. The combined organic layers were dried over MgSO4 and concentrated to give crude product (0.39 g, 97%), which was used directly in the next step. LCMS calculated for C16H13FN (M-NH2)+: m/z=238.1. Found: 238.1.
