Procedure
Into a 100-mL round-bottom flask, was placed 5-(2-fluoro-4-methylphenyl)-3-hydroxy-1,2-thiazole-4-carbonitrile (700 mg, 2.99 mmol, 1.00 equiv), dichloromethane (20 mL), triethylamine (302 mg, 2.98 mmol, 1.00 equiv). This was followed by the addition of Tf2O (1.69 g, 5.99 mmol, 2.00 equiv) at 0-5° C. The resulting solution was stirred overnight at 20° C. The resulting mixture was concentrated under vacuum. The residue was applied onto a silica gel column with ethyl acetate/petroleum ether (1:5). This resulted in 800 mg (73%) of 4-cyano-5-(2-fluoro-4-methylphenyl)-1,2-thiazol-3-yl trifluoromethanesulfonate as colorless oil.
