Procedure
Iron (1.94 g, 34 mmol) was added to a solution of 2-bromo-1-methoxy-3-nitrobenzene (2.50 g, 10.77 mmol) in ethanol (18 mL) and concentrated hydrochloric acid (1 mL), and the reaction was heated at reflux for 1.5 hours. The mixture was cooled to room temperature, filtered through Celite and concentrated in vacuo to afford the title compound as a solid. Yield: 2.57 g, 10.77 mmol, 100%. LCMS m/z 202.1 (M+1). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CD3OD) δ 3.77 (s, 3H), 6.30 (d, J=8.0 Hz, 1H), 6.43 (d, J=8.0 Hz, 1H), 6.98 (dd, J=8.0, 8.0 Hz, 1H).
