Procedure
A solution of methyl 3-(bromomethyl)benzoate (2.29 g, 0.01 mol) and potassium cyanide (3.26 g, 0.05 mol) in DMSO (20 mL) was heated to 100° C. for 1 h. The reaction mixture was cooled, partitioned between ether and water, washed with brine, dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated to give the title compound.
