Procedure
The product from Step C (8.495 grams), dissolved in dry CH2Cl2 (85 mL) was added dropwise to a 0° C. CH2Cl2 solution (34mL) of methanesulfonic acid (17 mL). The reaction was kept at 0° C. for 20 minutes, then briefly warmed to ambient temperature. The reaction was rapidly poured into a vigorously stirred cold mixture of excess 5N NaOH and methyl tert-butyl ether. The organic was dried over magnesium sulfate and filtered. Concentration and chromatography over silica gel (5:1 hex/CH2Cl2) gave the title compound as a clear oil.
