Potassium carbonate (2.07 g), methyl iodide (1.25 mL) were added to a solution of N-tert-butoxycarbonyl-O-benzyl-L-homoserine (3.10 g) in DMF (15 mL). After stirring at room temperature for 5 hr, the solvent was removed in vacuo. Ethyl acetate and water were added to the residue. The separated organic layer was washed with brine, dried over sodium sulfate, and evaporated in vacuo to give the title compound (3.13 g) as a pale yellow oil: 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 1.44 (m, 9H), 1.95-2.15 (m, 2H), 3.55 (m, 2H), 3.68 (s, 3H), 4.44 (m, 1H), 4.45 (d, J=11.6 Hz, 1H), 4.49 (d, J=11.7 Hz, 1H), 5.47 (m, 1H), and 7.27-7.37 (m, 5H).
