Procedure
In a 200 ml autoclave were charged 40.0 g (0.24 mol) of ethyl 4-chloro-3-oxobutyrate, 20 mg of Ru2Cl4((S)-Tol-BINAP)2.NEt3, and 40 ml of ethanol, and reaction was conducted at 100° C. under a hydrogen pressure of 300 KPa for 5 hours. After the solvent was removed, the reaction mixture was distilled (60° C./200 Pa.) to give 30.3 g of the title compound. Optical purity: 95%e.e.
