A mixture of 4-(chloromethyl)-2-(cyclopropylmethoxy)-1-methoxybenzene (7.4 g) in DMF (68 ml) was stirred at 60° C. A mixture of potassium cyanide (4.26 g) in water (3.4 ml), previously heated to 80° C., was added dropwise. The resulting reaction mixture was stirred for 30 minutes at 60° C. The reaction mixture was cooled, treated with water (47 ml), and extracted with DIPE. The separated organic layer was dried (Na2SO4), filtered, and the solvent was evaporated, yielding 6.2 g (85%) of 3-(cyclopropylmethoxy)-4-methoxybenzeneacetonitrile (interm. 16).
