Procedure

To a methylene chloride (10 ml) solution of trifluoroacetic acid (1.238 g) and triethylsilane (2.52 g), added is a methylene chloride (10 ml) solution of 5-methoxycarbonyl-2-methylthioindole (0.800 g), which had been prepared according to the method described in “Tetrahedron, 42 (16), 4511 (1986)”, and 2,4-dichlorobenzaldehyde (0.760 g), in an ice-water bath. This is stirred for 3 hours in the ice-water bath. The crystal formed is taken out through filtration and dried to obtain 3-(2,4-dichlorobenzyl)-5-methoxycarbonyl-2-methylthioindole (152) (0.727 g).
