To a solution of 1-fluoro-4-nitrobenzene (1.26 g, 8.92 mmol) and 3-(1-cyano-1-methylethyl)-N-(5-hydroxy-2-methylphenyl)benzamide (2.50 g, 8.5 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (20 mL) was added potassium carbonate (1.85 g, 13.3 mmol) and the mixture was stirred at 60° C. for 4 hr, and further at 70° C. for 12 hr. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, the insoluble material was filtered off, and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. The obtained residue was diluted with ethyl acetate (200 ml), washed with 5% aqueous sodium hydrogencarbonate solution (100 mL) and saturated brine (100 mL) successively, and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The insoluble material was filtered off, and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to give the title compound (3.41 g, 97%) as a yellow amorphous substance. The obtained compound was used in the next reaction without a further purification.
