16.05 g (71.04 mmol) of 2-(4-fluorobenzylamino)malonamide are refluxed with 71 ml of triethyl orthoformate, i.e. 6 equivalents, and a catalytic amount of PTSA (250 mg) in 535 ml of absolute ethanol, in a round-bottomed flask placed under argon.
