2.9 g of 1-ethyl-4-piperidone, 3.3 g of cyanoacetic acid and 36 ml of toluene are placed in a round-bottomed flask equipped with a magnetic stirrer, and under a stream of nitrogen. The mixture is refluxed for 4 hours, while removing the water using Markusson apparatus. The solvent is evaporated off under vacuum. 4.2 g of oil are obtained.
