To a chilled (0° C.) solution of [(S)-1-(2-carbamoyl-piperidin-4-yl)-propyl]-carbamic acid tert-butyl ester (780 mg, 2.73 mmol) in methylene chloride (25 mL) was added DIPEA (0.41 mL, 2.9 mmol) followed by benzylchloroformate (723 μL, 4.1 mmol). After 1 hour, the reaction was diluted with dichloromethane (200 mL), washed with saturated ammonium chloride, brine, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated to afford 4-((S)-1-tert-butoxycarbonylamino-propyl)-2-carbamoyl-piperidine-1-carboxylic acid benzyl ester.
