Procedure
Potassium persulfate (7.42 g) was slowly added to a stirred mixture of 2,6-dichloroquinoxaline (5.0 g) and concentrated sulfuric acid (25 ml) at a temperature of 10° C. On completion of the addition the mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature and the mixture was stirred for a further 24 hours. The mixture was poured into ice-water (400 ml), neutralized with aqueous sodium bicarbonate and the mixture was extracted with dichloromethane. The organic extract was washed with brine, dried (over anhydrous sodium sulfate) and the solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure. The residue was crystallised from ethanol to give 2,6-dichloroquinoxaline-1-oxide as brown needles, mp 185° C.
