A mixture of methyl 6-bromo-3-hydroxypicolinate (10.0 g, 43.10 mmol), MeI (12.3 g, 86.66 mmol) and K2CO3 (12.0 g, 86.83 mmol) in DMF (100 mL) was stirred at RT overnight. Then the reaction mixture was concentrated, diluted with water and extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated to give methyl 6-bromo-3-methoxypicolinate (4.5 g, yield 42%). 1H-NMR (CDCl3, 400 MHz) δ 7.55 (d, J=8.8 Hz, 1H), 7.24 (d, J=8.8 Hz, 1H), 3.94 (s, 3H), 3.90 (s, 3H). MS (M+H)+: 246/248.
