Procedure
A mixture of 2,6-dichloro-4-fluorobenzaldehyde (10.0 g, 51.8 mmol), nitromethane (2 mL) and K2CO3 (3.57 g, 25.9 mmol) was stirred at room temperature for 2 h. The reaction mixture was quenched with water and extracted with EtOAc (2×100 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with water (2×50 mL) and brine (20 mL), dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, and concentrated under reduced pressure to provide compound A31-1 (26.0 g, crude) as yellow gum. The crude product was used in the next step without purification.
