Procedure

Lithium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide (1.6 M in THF, 6.15 ml) was added to a solution of methyl 4-(6-bromo-1-methyl-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)butanoate (1.02 g) in THF (20 ml) at −78° C. After being stirred at −78° C. for 30 min, iodomethane (0.612 ml) was added to the reaction mixture. The mixture was stirred at room temperature under Ar atmosphere for 2 h. The mixture was quenched with saturated NH4Cl solution at room temperature and extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was separated, washed with saturated NaHCO3 solution and brine, dried over MgSO4, and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (hexane/EtOAc) to give the title compound (440 mg) as a pale yellow solid.
