Lithium hydroxide (0.29 g, 12.08 mmol) and water (4 ml) were added to a solution of methyl 5-bromo-4-methyl-2-[(phenylmethyl)oxy]benzoate (may be prepared as described in Description 8; 1.35 g, 4.03 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (20 ml). The reaction was heated at 40° C. for 18 hours. The solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue was partitioned between water (20 ml) and ethyl acetate (30 ml). The aqueous layer was acidified to pH2 using 2N HCl. The organic layer was separated, dried (MgSO4) and the solvent removed in vacuo to yield the title compound as a white solid. 1.26 g.
