Procedure
A solution of p-methoxyphenyl magnesium bromide was prepared from p-bromo-anisole (18.5 g) and magnesium (2.5 g)in tetrahydrofuran (50 ml). The solution was cooled to -40° to -50° C. and methylene chloride (25 ml) was added followed by a solution of 7-chloro- 1,2,3,4,4a,9b-hexahydro-2-methyl-5H-1,3-ethanoindeno-[1,2-c]pyridin-5-one (9.16 g) (compound (2))in methylene chloride (40 ml). The solution was stirred first at -50° C. then overnight at 0° C.
