A solution of 1-[2-(methylthio)pyrimidin-4-yl]ethanone (1-3, 300 mg) in N,N-dimethylformamide dimethyl acetal (10 mL) was heated at 85° C. for16 hours. The mixture was concentrated to give (2E)-3-(dimethylamino)-1-[2-(methylthio)pyrimidin-4-yl]prop-2-en-1-one (1-4) as a yellow oil which crystallized upon standing. LRMS m/z: Calc'd for C10H14N3OS (M+H) 224.1. found 224.0.
