Procedure
Methyl 4-(2,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)-3,5-dimethylbenzoate of Step A (1.55 g, 6 mmol) was dissolved in ethanol (100 mL) and treated with 1M sodium hydroxide (9 mL). The solution was refluxed overnight, cooled to room temperature, acidified with 1N hydrochloric acid, and diluted into water and ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with water until neutral, dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated in vacuo to yield the title compound as a a cream colored solid (1.36 g).
