A mixture of 3-(2-pyridyl)-5-(3-cyano-5-hydroxyphenyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole (30 mg, 0.11 mmol), potassium carbonate (374 mg, 2.7 mmol) and 2-dimethylaminoethyl chloride hydrochloride. (46 mg, 0.32 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (1 mL) were heated in a sealed vial at 150° C. for 5 minutes. The reaction was cooled, diluted with dichloromethane, washed with water (3×) and saturated brine, filtered and concentrated. Silica gel chromatography using a gradient of 1% methanol in dichloromethane to 5% methanol in dichloromethane afforded 24 mg (53%) of 3-(2-pyridyl)-5-(3-cyano-5-(2-dimethylaminoethoxy)phenyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole: 1H NMR (CDCl3): δ −8.86 (d, 1H), 8.23 (d, 1H), 8.15 (s, 1H), 8.04 (s, 1H), 7.91 (t, 1H), 7.49 (m, 1H), 7.43 (s, 1H), 4.20 (t, 2H), 2.80 (t, 2H), 2.37 (s, 6H).
