Under argon, 20 (0.60 g, 1.9 mmol) was dissolved in dry DMF (4 mL) and to this sodium hydride (60% in oil, 0.09 g, 2.28 mmol) was added. To the resulting orange solution, 4-fluorobenzaldehyde (0.25 mL, 2.28 mmol) was added and heated at 80° C. for 18 h. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, water (10 mL) was added and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (3×20 mL). The crude product obtained after evaporation was purified by chromatography over silica gel and elution with a mixture of hexane-ethyl acetate (4:1) to yield 21 as white solid (0.59 g, 74%): 1HNMR(400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 9.93 (s, 1H), 7.86 (d, J=8.8 Hz, 2H), 7.49 (d, J=8.8 Hz, 2H), 7.10 (overlapped d, J=8.8 Hz, 2H), 7.08 (overlapped d, J=8.8 Hz, 2H), 6.96 (s, 1H), 6.53 (dd, J=2.8 Hz, 2H), 6.43 (t, J=2.0 Hz, 1H), 3.80(s, 3H), 3.79 (s, 6H).
