Procedure

Fluvastatin methyl ester (3.0 g) was added to a solution of NaOH (1 eq.) in water (0.75 ml) and propan-2-ol (7.5 ml). The mixture was heated to reflux and 1 ml of propan-2-ol was added. After 2 h the mixture was cooled to room temperature and stirred for 2 h. MTBE (60 ml) was dripped into the solution over 20 min and it was stirred for another 1.5 h. The product was isolated by filtration under nitrogen, washed with MTBE and dried at 50° C. in a vacuum oven for 24 h to obtain 1.9 g (62%) of fluvastatin sodium Form VII.
