Procedure
A solution of crude (7R,8S)-7-(butyl)-8-(amino)-1,4-dioxa-spiro[4.5]decane (4.2 g, 0.02 mol) in 100 mL of CH2Cl2 was treated with an aqueous solution of K2CO3 and cooled in a ice bath. The mixture is stirred vigorously while benzyl chloroformate (3.42 g, 0.02 mol) is added slowly. After the addition is complete the mixture is stirred an additional 30 min. The organic layer is separated and washed with water, brine and concentrated. The residue was chromatographed on silica gel to give 3 g of benzyl ((7S,8S)-7-(butyl)-1,4-dioxa-spiro[4.5]dec-8-yl)-carbamate.
