Procedure
A stirred mixture of 4-hydroxy-alpha-oxobenzeneacetic acid methyl ester (1.79 g) in dimethylformamide (30 mL) under argon was treated with 55% sodium hydride (0.432 g), stirred for 15 minutes and treated with (Z)-(3-chloro-1-propenyl)benzene (1.9 g). The mixture was heated at 60° C. overnight and worked up as in Example 20. The crude dichloromethane extract was purified by HPLC (dichloromethane-hexane; 4:1 ) and the resulting 1.9 g of analytically pure (Z)-alpha-oxo-4-[(3-phenyl-2-propenyl)oxy]benzeneacetic acid methyl ester failed to crystallize.
