Procedure
Sodium hydride (0.63 g, 26.3 mmol) and cyclopentanemethanol (2.8 ml, 25.9 mmol) in dimethylformamide were heated at 50° for 30 min. The reaction mixture was cooled to 20° and (R)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane-4-methanol 4-methylbenzenesulphonate (5.0 g, 17.5 mmol) added. The reaction mixture was heated at 50° for 30 min and left at 20° for 18 h. Ether and brine were added, the organic layer dried (Na2SO4) and the solvent evaporated to give the sub-title ether (3.0 g).
