Procedure

A solution of 692 mg of racemic-6-acetyl-3,4-dihydro-7-hydroxy-2-methyl-8-n-propyl-2H-1-benzopyran-2-propanoic acid and 100 mg of p-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate in 10 ml of absolute ethanol was stirred and refluxed for 17 hours. The resulting solution was cooled and treated with a small amount of saturated sodium bicarbonate then concentrated in vacuo to remove the ethanol. The residue was treated with ether and the ether solution was processed in the usual manner given 752 mg of a yellow oil. This material was chromatographed on 50 g of silica gel. Elution with 4:1 toluene-ethyl acetate provided 706 mg (92.9%) of racemic-6-acetyl-3,4-dihydro-7-hydroxy-2-methyl-8-n-propyl-2H-1-benzopyran-2-propanoic acid ethyl ester as a yellow oil.
