Procedure

To a solution of 4-hydroxy-3-propylbenzonitrile (0.97 g, 6 mmol) (Example 29) in DMF (20 mL) were added 10 drops of water, benzyl bromide (2.05 g, 12 mmol), and Cs2CO3 (2.93 g, 9 mmol), and the mixture was stirred for 12 h at rt. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure, and the residue was suspended in EtOAc and filtered. The precipitate was washed with more EtOAc. The combined filtrates were concentrated and purified by silica gel chromatography (EtOAc/hexanes (v/v)=1:19) to give 1.23 g (82%) of the title compound. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): δ 7.48-7.32 (m, 7H), 6.92 (d, 1H), 5.13 (s, 2H), 2.67 (t, 2H), 1.72-1.60 (m, 2H), 0.98 (t, 3H).
