10.4 g (56 millimoles) of potassium transcinnamate and 12.0 g (47 millimoles) of methyl orthobromomethylphenylglyoxalate are dissolved in 250 ml of N-methylpyrrolidone, a pinch of potassium iodide is added and the mixture is stirred for 15 hours at room temperature (23° C.). Thereafter, the mixture is poured onto 500 ml of ice water and extracted with 3×200 ml of methyl tert-butyl ether and the organic phase is washed with water, dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated down in a rotary evaporator. The yield of ketoester is 15.0 g (99%). Thin layer chromatographic analysis shows that it is virtually pure.
