A mixture of 1-(4-fluorophenyl)butane-1,3-dione (1.0 g), potassium carbonate (3.42 g), and tetrabutylammonium bromide (20 mg) in toluene (10 ml) was refluxed for 3 hours. After cooling to 20° C., ethyl bromoacetate (0.74 ml) was added to the mixture. After being allowed to stand at 20° C. overnight, the mixture was partitioned between ethyl acetate and 0.5N hydrochloric acid. The organic layer was separated, washed with water and brine, dried over magnesium sulfate, and evaporated. The residue was chromatographed on silica gel eluting with a mixture of ethyl acetate and hexane (1:5) to give ethyl 3-(4-fluorobenzoyl)-4-oxopentanoate (964 mg) as an oil.
