Procedure
A small amount of triethylamine was added to 10 g (53.6 mmol) of trans-4-n-propylcyclohexanecarbonyl chloride dissolved in 30 ml of ethanol, followed by 10 hours of stirring at room temperature. The reaction mixture was poured into 100 ml of iced water, acidified with 6N-hydrochloric acid and extracted with isopropyl ether. The organic layer was repeatedly washed with water until the aqueous layer became a neutral, followed by drying with magnesium sulfate, distilling-off of the solvent and purification by silica gel column chromatography to obtain 9.9 g of ethyl trans-4-n-propylcyclohexylcarboxylate.
