Procedure
A 400 g portion of the catalyst precursor prepared in Example I was placed in about 57 cm. of a 79 cm. long (1.3 cm. diameter) reactor tube made from solid 316 type stainless steel. The catalyst precursor was reduced by passing a gaseous stream of geraniol and nerol (65% geraniol/35% nerol; 489 mg/min, 3.17 mmol/min), O2 (63 ml/min, 2.8 mmol/min), and steam (6.1 ml/min water) through the reactor tube at 375° C. (external sand bath temperature) to produce citral. This reaction was also performed using the catalyst precursor prepared as in Example II and the copper spheres prepared by analogy with the process described by British Patent Specification 1,381,587, respectively, in place of the catalyst precursor of Example I.
