A stirred suspension of (S)-(acetylthio)benzenepropanoic acid prepared from the dicyclohexylamine salt as described previously (324 mg., 0.80 mmol.) in ethyl acetate (15 ml.) was washed twice with 5% potassium bisulfate (5 ml.). The organic extract was dried (magnesium sulfate), filtered and evaporated twice from methylene chloride. The resulting oil was dissolved methylene chloride (15 ml.) and stirred under argon at -5° C. To this solution was added a solution of the product from part (1) (174 mg., 0.724 mmol.) in methylene chloride (4 ml.), then triethylamine (100 μl., 0.74 mmol.) and finally benzotriazol-1-yloxytris (dimethylamino)phosphonium hexafluorophosphate (325 mg., 0.733 mmol.). After 1 hour, the reaction was warmed to room temperature and stirred 3 hours. The resulting colorless solution was evaporated at less than 30° C. and the oily residue redissolved in ethyl acetate. The solution was washed once with 1M hydrochloric acid, once with water and once with brine. The organic layer was dried (magnesium sulfate), filtered and evaporated. Purification by flash chromatography (2.5×20 cm column, eluting with 47:53 ethyl acetate/hexanes) provided 240 mg. of title product as a white foam.
