Procedure

To a solution of 2,7-dichlorofluorene (1.0 g, 4.3 mmol) in 3 mL of THF was added n-BuLi (2 mL, 5.0 mmol) at -78° C. under argon and the solution was stirred at -78° C. for 0.5 hours. A solution of C2H5I (0.78 g, 5.0 mmol) in 1 mL of THF was poured into the solution and stirred at -78° for 15 min, quenched with NH4Cl solution, concentrated and extracted the residue with ethyl acetate, dried with MgSO4 and evaporated to get the crude product which was purified by silica gel column chromatography using hexane as the eluent to obtain 1.35 g (74%) of 2,7-dichloro-9-ethylfluorene was a white solid, mp 80°-83° C.: IR: 3435, 1453, 1422, 1296, 1160, 1072, 885, 807 cm-1.H1NMR (CDCl3, 300 MHz) δ 7.2-7.8 (m, 6H), 3.9-4.1 (t, 1H), 2.0-2.2 (m, 2H), 0.6-0.8 (t, 3H).
