Procedure
40 g of 2-nitro-4-methoxyphenol were stirred into a mixture of 200 ml of water and 200 ml of 35% strength sodium hydroxide solution in the dark. 100 g of sodium thiosulfate were added to the reaction mixture and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for a further 2 hours. For work-up, the reaction mixture was neutralized by the addition of 12N hydrochloric acid solution and extracted four times with 500 ml of ethyl acetate. The organic extracts were washed twice with 500 ml of water, dried, filtered and evaporated. 30 g of 2-amino-4-methoxyphenol were obtained as a residue and further processed without further purification.
