Procedure
A mixture of 8-chloro-3-(4-chlorobenzyl)-5-hydroxy-4-methyl-1H-quinolin-2-one (0.14 g), N,N-dimethylformamide (10 mL), sodium hydride (60% in oil, 0.020 g) and 2-bromo-2-methylpropionic acid methyl ester (0.11 g) was stirred at 100° C. for 3 days. The mixture was cooled to room temperature, diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined extracts were dried over magnesium sulfate and the solvent removed under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel, eluting with a mixture of ethyl acetate and cyclohexane (3:7 by volume) to afford title compound, 0.056 g.
