Procedure

A solution of (4R)-4-[(1R)-1-hydroxy-1-(1,3-thiazol-2-yl)ethyl]-1-[(1S)-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethyl]pyrrolidin-2-one (3.6 g, 10.4 mmol) in TFA (10 mL) was heated to 70° C. for 5 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, diluted with IPA (30 mL), and stirred until the color dissipated. The reaction mixture was then absorbed on silica gel and purified by silica gel chromatography to afford (4R)-4-[(1R)-1-hydroxy-1-(1,3-thiazol-2-yl)ethyl]pyrrolidin-2-one. MS ESI calc'd. for C9H13N2O2S [M+H]+ 213. found 213. 1H NMR (600 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 7.69 (d, J=3.2 Hz, 1H), 7.54 (d, J=3.2 Hz, 1H), 7.35 (s, 1H), 6.12 (s, 1H), 3.08 (dd, J=9.1, 7.3 Hz, 1H), 2.96-2.86 (m, 1H), 2.82 (t, J=9.0 Hz, 1H), 2.22 (dd, J=16.8, 8.7 Hz, 1H), 2.14 (dd, J=16.8, 9.6 Hz, 1H), 1.42 (s, 3H).
