Procedure
To a solution of 6-fluoro-1-(phenylsulfonyl)-3-(1H-pyrazol-4-yl)-1H-indole (Intermediate 5; 1.00 g; 2.93 mmol) and K2CO3 (1.30 g; 9.41 mmol) in DMF (40 mL) was added ethyl bromoacetate (1.50 g; 8.98 mmol). The mixture was stirred at 70° C. for 2 hours, cooled to r.t., diluted with 10% aqueous NH4Cl (20 mL) and extracted with EtOAc (20 mL×3). The combined organic layers were washed with water (20 mL), brine (20 mL), dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated to afford 1.10 g (88%) of the title compound as a yellow solid, which was used directly without further purification.
