Procedure
1.600 M of n-Butyllithium in hexane (1.0×10−1 mL) was added to 1,3-thiazole (0.958 mL, 0.0135 mol) in THF (20 mL) at −78° C. After 30 minutes, tert-butyl 3-oxopyrrolidine-1-carboxylate (2.50 g, 0.0135 mol) in THF (10 mL) was added, and the mixture was slowly warmed to room temperature overnight. The reaction was quenched with water, and the reaction mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate, dried with MgSO4, filtered and concentracted. The residue was purified by flash column (50% EtOAc/hexanes to pure EtOAc) to give the desired product (2.57 g, 70%).
