Procedure
A 0° C. solution of 4-chloro-pyridine-2-carbonyl chloride (27.6 g, 0.16 mol) in THF (100 mL) at was treated drop-wise with a solution of MeNH2 in EtOH, stirred at 3° C. for 4 h, then concentrated to dryness. The material was suspended in EtOAc, the solids removed via filtration and the filtrate was washed with brine (2×), dried and concentrated to yield 4-chloro-N-methylpicolinamide (16.4 g, 60%) as a yellow solid. 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 8.78 (br s, 1 H), 8.55 (d, J=5.2 Hz, 1 H), 7.97 (d, J=2.0 Hz, 1 H), 7.66 (m, 1 H), 2.82 (d, J=4.8 Hz, 3H); MS (ESI) m/z: 171.0 (M+H+).
