Procedure
2-Hydroxy-5-methoxyacetophenone (11.1 g), 4-chloro-6,7-dimethoxyquinoline (5.00 g), and 4-dimethylaminopyridine (8.10 g) were suspended in o-dichlorobenzene (40 ml) to prepare a suspension which was then stirred at 120° C. for 48 hr. The reaction solution was cooled to room temperature, and the solvent was then removed by distillation under the reduced pressure. Water was added to the residue, and the mixture was extracted with chloroform. The chloroform layer was then washed with water and saturated brine and was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was removed by distillation under the reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography using acetone-hexane to give 1-[2-(6,7-dimethoxy-quinolin-4-yloxy)-5-methoxy-phenyl]-ethanone (802 mg, yield 10%).
