20 g of 2-amino-4-hexadecyloxy-5-methylphenol hydrochloride and 18 g of 4-(2-methoxyethoxy)nitrobenzene-3-sulfonyl chloride prepared as described in Step (a) above were added to a mixture of 100 ml of tetrahydrofuran and 10 ml of pyridine and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was added to a mixture of 300 ml of ice water and 50 ml of a 35% hydrochloric acid aqueous solution with stirring. The crystals thus-precipitated were recovered with filtration, washed with water, air-dried and recrystallized from 100 ml of acetonitrile. Yield: 35 g; Melting Point: 85.5° to 86° C.
