Procedure
A mixture of 14 parts of 2-(ethylthio)-1-(4-methylphenyl)-1H-imidazole monohydrochloride and 113 parts of hydrobromic acid solution 48% in glacial acetic is stirred and refluxed for 3 hours. The reaction mixture is evaporated and the residue is dissolved in water. The solution is neutralized with sodium hydrogen carbonate. The precipitated product is filtered off and crystallized from 2-propanol, yielding 8.3 parts (72.5%) of 4-[2-(ethylthio)-1H-imidazol-1yl]phenol; mp. 165.2° C.
