2.3 g of methyl 6-methoxycarbonylmethoxy-2-naphthoate and 2.3 g of KOH are heated under reflux for 3 h in 100 ml of water and 10 ml of DMF. The mixture is then acidified to pH 0.3 using hydrochloric acid, and the precipitate which is deposited is filtered off with suction at RT. 1.7 g of methyl 6-carboxymethoxy-2-naphthoate are obtained;
