Procedure

A solution of 190 mg (0.5 mmol) of 2-[[3-(2-amino-2-oxoethyl)-2-methyl-1-(phenylmethyl)-1H-indol-5-yl]oxy]acetic acid ethyl ester and 2 mL of 5N NaOH in 30 mL of EtOH and 10 mL of THF was stirred for approximately 15 hours, the mixture made acidic with 5N HCl and extracted with EtOAc. The EtOAc solution was washed with saturated NaCl solution, dried (Na2SO4), and concentrated at reduced pressure. The residue was washed with ether to give 155 mg (90% yield) of 2-[[3-(2-amino-2-oxoethyl)-2-methyl-1-(phenylmethyl)-1H-indol-5-yl]oxy]acetic acid, mp, 196°-198° C.
